Gill has been playing the violin since she was 13, having also learnt piano & the clarinet.
Her mother was a professional classical singer and piano teacher but both Grandfathers had played violin and their instruments were stored at home.
One thing soon led to another!
The school system steered her into classical music and she was the leader of her first orchestra by the age of 15, reaching Grade 8 Distinction.
Gill has been under the baton of Simon Rattle, if you will pardon the expression and she recorded her first album in 1978.
She played the Star Wars theme music in 1978 in the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra - the first orchestra to do so after Spielberg & Co - and to date has never found a piece of music that is harder to play.
Gill started studying music at college but after her mother died when she was sixteen, she gave up all music before resuming again ten years later.
It was the music in Riverdance and the film Titanic that awakened an interest in irish music. In particular, the haunting sound of the Uillean pipes caught her attention.
She had not played with them in an orchestra and wanted to accompany them.
In 2004, she heard about an irish music session in a local pub, turned up one night and has never looked back.
Gill is experienced at playing with many bands, amongst them the Treefellahs, Murphy's Lore, Agglestone and Cottage Industry. She also plays occasionally with the Bushwhackers.
